‘FANTASTIC DISPLACEMENTS OF PERFECTION’
Tristan Mausse for The Surfer’s Journal

In our last issue’s TSJ 35.4, “The Fantastic Displacements of Perfection,” author Dodge Weirath profiles French shaper and laminator Tristan Mausse. His label, Fantastic Acid, specializes in meticulously crafted displacement-style designs with hand-foiled fins and custom glass jobs. “Fragments. Fractures. Ideas left behind,” Weirath writes. “When Mausse looks at surf history, he doesn’t see a smooth, lifting curve. He doesn’t even see history per se. He sees a forever-expanding field of mitosis.”

The feature’s photographer, Thomas Lodin, has shot and edited the above short film as a companion to Mausse’s print profile. Act I features a workshop conversation between Mausse and his mentor, 70-year-old French shaper and artist Joel Roux. Act II features Mausse surfing his designs, scored by fellow French surfer Clovis Donizetti.
